Authorized Generics: The Study War Continues

Last summer, PhRMA and GPhA release competing studies on authorized generics (Antitrust Review coverage here, here and here).  On Tuesday, PhRMA release another study: Do Authorized Generic Drugs Deter Paragraph IV Certifications?,” co-authored by Professor Ernst R. Berndt of MIT’s Sloan School of Management, Analysis Group Vice President Richard Mortimer, and Analysis Group Managing Principal Andrew Parece.  According to the PhRMA press release, the study:

there is no evidence that the recent increase in prevalence of authorized generics has resulted in delays in generic entry into the marketplace. This report reinforces findings in a separate study that authorized generics increase competition and lower prices for consumers.

GPHa, in its press release, responds that, the study is “a disingenuous attempt to devalue the 180-day exclusivity period, which is an important incentive for generic pharmaceutical companies to challenge questionable patents and bring affordable medicines to market.”
